3D Studio VIZ Tutorial
(Similar to MAX, some function may be different)

Basic Process:
1. Create 3D solid model using AutoCAD
2. Open 3D Studio and import the DWG file you created using AutoCAD
3. Add texture using 3D Studio
4. Add photo on solids
5. Add lights using 3D Studio
6. Add background
7. Make movies

Make 3D DWG file
Separate objects by color
They will be grouped by color when exported


Import DWG file into 3D Studio
Open 3D Studio
File
Import

Change the bottom window "File Type" to DWG
Locate your AutoCAD file
OK

Chose Merge or Replace
Chose separate by color or layer

Unclick "Convert to single object" and "Group common objects"- You can color separately

Make sure Surface definition is 0.1


Add color, reflection, transparency
Open material editor: It is at
Render
Material Editor

Press Ambient to change color
Change Opacity to make translucent
Change Specular to make reflective

When ready, move the cursor over the material, press and
hold the mouse down, drug and move the cursor to the solid
you like to apply the material

Try render to see the true color
Rendering
Render
Set the Time Output to Single

If you do not see "RENDER" button, close all sub-windows
in the Render Window then press Enter on your keyboard.


Add bitmap texture or photo on solids
There are some texture in the materials library or you can use own material or any image photo.

Example 1 - Pick one of the materials from the selection
Open material editor:
Render
Material Editor
Select one of the not used shears on this window by clicking one

Scroll down the materials window to the bottom
Open Map view

Select Diffuse Color by clicking the box
Click button saying none on the line of Diffuse Color
Material/Map Browser shows up

Click one of the material and OK

When ready, move the cursor over the material, press and hold the mouse down, drug and move the cursor to the solid you like to apply the material

Render to see the true material color

Render
Set the Time Output to Single

Example 2 - Apply your own photo
Open material editor:
Render
Material Editor
Select one of the not used shears on this window by clicking one

Scroll down the materials window to the bottom
Open Map view

Select Diffuse Color by clicking the box
Click button saying none on the line of Diffuse Color
Material/Map Browser shows up

Click on Bitmap (the top one)
OK

Change Files of type to your photo such as JPG or TIF
Find your photo
OK

When ready, move the cursor over the material, press and hold the mouse down, drug and move the cursor to the solid you like to apply the material

Render to see the true material color
Rendering
Render
Set the Time Output to Single

Use Bitmap Parameter to change the scale and number of photo image on solid


Add lights
Open Lights
Select Omni Standard Light
Click on the window to locate
Move as needed
Render to see lighting effects

Change intensity and color at Modify window to the right
(Click on the light then open Modify window)
Multiplier changes intensity
Color window is next to it


Add background
Rendering then Environment
Change color or select bitmap photo


Make movies

Make 4 windows (right corner button)
Zoom All makes everything in view (use often)
Use Pan or Zoom to make your object in the windows large

View:
T for Top View
F for Front View
L for Left View
P for perspective (right bottom window)
C for Camera View



Use Target Camera
Go to Top View
Press hold mouse for the camera location
Drag mouse for the Target location then release mouse button

 

Activate the Perspective view by clicking it then change Perspective view to Camera view by pressing C on keyboard

Position camera to the starting position
Press Animate (Auto for MAX)
Move animation time scale to 10 or 20 then move camera
Continue this until 100

Move camera using Move tool on the menu above

Slow down the movement using Time Config
Press Re-scale Time then change Length
from 100 to 400 to make it 4 times slower

Making Movie

Test animate the entire movie
When ready, render by choosing Render under Rendering



Set the Range to 400 (the length of movie)
Change the size to 320x240
Give a file name and change file type to AVI File
Select compression program "Indio Video 5.10"

Set the Compression Quality to 100
